African Pound for Pound Best as voted by SA MMA Media

African Pound for Pound Best as voted by SA MMA Media

So as many of you may have seen on twitter a bunch of the usual MMA media platforms in South Africa got together and made a ranking system. This system is by no means perfect (is any system really) but it will do for now. How it works and who is ranked how is listed below. Wht I would like to see is a more ,mathematically based system. Something similar to the FIFA equation. However, there is not enough depth in the divisions yet for that. However, if there is a statistician out there that can come up with a formula, please do so and share it with us. The pound for pound ‘champion’ has been elected as Leon Mynardt. While I do not want to take away from his obvious talent and hard work I can’t see it and not sure what the others are seeing that I am not. Demarte is undefeated in a large quantity of bouts thus rightly so the P4P best. Anyways, this system will take a few more rounds to iron out the issues and become more and more balanced.

What do you think? Let us know if you agree with the rankings or any other thoughts below.

“For the first time in South Africa we have introduced, as a combined team, the first MMA rankings that are truly transparent and open for public scrutiny / review.

We polled the valued contributors to local MMA for their Top 5 MMA fighters per weight division, and their overall Pound for Pound Top 5. These were then all imported into the rankings system and the combined Top 5 per division are represented below. All professional MMA promotions in South Africa are part of the scope for the rankings.

Rankings are of course subjective, which is why we will always look at expanding the Rankings Contributors, as the higher number of inputs we have, the less we are relying on the law of averages.

Introducing the Ranking Contributors:

  • CageSide                                           – Twitter: @CageSideSA
  • MMAGang                                         – Twitter: @MMAGang
  • Muay Guy                                          – Twitter: @MuayGuyBlog
  • PrettyTuffZa                                     – Twitter: @PrettyTuffZA
  • Smacktalk                                          – Twitter: @Smacktalkcoza
  • KNUXX SA                                          – Twitter: @KNUXX_SA
  • MMA Blog SouthAfrica                   – Twitter: @MMABlogSA

Ranking Methodology:

  • The current EFC champion will always be ranked at the top of their weight class. (No other Promotions have champions, rankings methodology to be updated once scenario is reached)
  • The fighters nominated will be ranked from #1 Contender to #5.
  • The weighting scale applied is as follows: The number one contender will be allocated 10 points, second will be allocated 8 points etc. all the way down to 2 points for the fifth fighter.
  • Where the total scores are even for any fighters, a  decider is invoked in this order of priority:
    1. 1. Current Win Streak Total (if valid)
    2. 2. Previous fight between them result (if valid)
    3. 3. Previous Title Fight or Champion

If all above cannot provide resolution, a separate vote will be taken between the submitters, if that is still even then the total EFC fight record win/loss ratio takes effect as the decider. If that still fails a coin toss will occur.

Weight Division Ranking Criteria:

  • Fighter must have fought in the previous 24 months.
  • Fighter can only be ranked in one weight class, their primary one.
  • Fighter cannot be ranked in a new weight class, unless at least one fight has taken place at that weight.
  • Missed weight does not count as a new weight class qualifier.
  • There can only be one fighter per ranking in a weight class, Pound for Pound can allow a ranking to be shared.

 123 4 5 6 7

Pound for Pound Ranking Criteria:

  • Fighter must have fought in the previous 24 months.
  • Only five fighters to be submitted for Pound for Pound list, a fighter does not need to be a champion to be nominated for this list
  • Same weighting scale to be applied to this list as per above.

We are planning on producing the rankings at least once a month, or 72 hours after a MMA event.”

  1. Being undefeated does not make you Pound for Pound “champion”, it literally means if the fighters were all the same size, who would win in a fight, Anderson Silva himself was not undefeated yet reigned top of the PfP lists for a very long time
